Choosing Subjects for the Future

During Year 8 or Year 9, your child will make important choices about the subjects and qualifications they will study through to the end of Year 11. The timing of these decisions, along with the subjects available, will vary between Meridian Trust schools.

Whilst these choices may feel significant, it is important to remember that there is rarely one ""right"" choice. Students should be encouraged to select subjects that match their interests, strengths and future aspirations, while keeping a broad range of opportunities open.

All students will continue to study the core subjects of English, mathematics and science. They will also have the opportunity to choose from a range of additional subjects and qualifications, which may include both GCSEs and vocational courses.

Schools will provide detailed information about the options available and how the selection process works. We strongly encourage parents and carers to attend the school's options evening, where staff will be able to explain the courses on offer and help students make informed decisions.

You may find it helpful to ask the following questions:

• What courses are available (GCSEs and/or vocational qualifications)?
• What knowledge, skills and topics will students study?
• How will students be assessed (examinations, coursework or a combination of both)?
• How are the qualifications graded?
• What skills and qualities will students develop through this subject?
• How might this subject support future study, training or career pathways?
