Planning for Post-16

As your child reaches the end of Year 11, they will start thinking about what they would like to do next. This stage is known as Post-16. There are several options available, and the best choice will depend on your child's interests, strengths and future plans. It is important to remember that there is no single route to success, and different pathways can lead to the same career.

In England, all young people must stay in education or training until they are 18 years old.

After Year 11, students can choose from a number of options, including:

• Full-time study at a school sixth form, sixth form college or further education college.
• An apprenticeship, where they earn a wage while learning new skills and gaining qualifications.
• Employment or volunteering alongside part-time education or training.

Each option offers different opportunities and experiences. Some young people prefer to continue studying in a classroom, while others enjoy learning in the workplace. The most important thing is choosing a route that suits your child's interests, strengths and goals.

Schools will provide information, advice and support to help students and families explore the choices available. We encourage parents and carers to attend Post-16 information events and open evenings, where they can learn more about the different options and ask questions.
